Carpet is a textile floor covering, with fibres such as wool or hard-wearing synthetics tufted or woven into a backing and laid over a cushioning underlay. That underlay adds warmth, sound insulation and longevity, which is why a good carpet feels and lasts far better than the carpet alone would suggest.
Carpets vary by fibre, by pile style such as twist, saxony, loop or berber, and by density. Those differences decide how a carpet feels underfoot and how well it copes with traffic, so a soft deep pile suits a bedroom while a tighter twist or loop is better for stairs and hallways.
