Which kind of mat?
A mat has one job: stop the dirt at the door. The right one depends on which door, and whether it needs to look nice or just work hard.

One outside, one inside
The trick is two mats: a rubber or coir scraper on the step outside to take the grit off, and a softer absorbent mat just inside to take the wet. A washable mat inside means the muddy one goes in the machine, not the bin.
Measure the space first. Most doormats are 75 x 50cm or 60 x 40cm, and the door needs to clear it, so check the gap under the door before you buy a thick coir one.
