What is the difference between a cut pile and a loop pile?

A loop pile leaves the yarn looped, making it tough and hard to crush. A cut pile shears the tops off so fibres stand upright, softer underfoot but showing footprints more. Loop suits halls and stairs, cut pile suits bedrooms and lounges.

Is polyester carpet any good?

Polyester takes colour beautifully and resists water-based stains, and it is very soft. It does not spring back from heavy crushing as well as polyamide or wool, so it suits bedrooms better than staircases.

About Expectations

Expectations is a cut pile, which means the yarn loops are sheared off at the top so the fibres stand upright rather than looping over. That's what makes it soft — there's nothing between your foot and the cut ends of the yarn. It's the opposite proposition to the flatweaves we stock: less hardwearing in a hallway, considerably nicer to stand on in a bedroom. This one is tufted from polyester in a tightly twisted pile, and the twist is doing important work. A loosely twisted cut pile goes fuzzy and loses definition; a tight twist holds each tuft distinct, which is what gives Expectations its velvet appearance and stops it looking tired quickly. Polyester also takes colour extremely well, so the shades have a depth and richness that's hard to get in other fibres, and it naturally resists water-based stains. At 1,330g of pile per square metre it's a substantial carpet with real weight behind it. Where we'd be straight with you: polyester is softer and more colour-rich than polyamide, but it doesn't bounce back from heavy crushing quite as well — so for a hall or a staircase taking constant traffic, ask us about Sensibility instead. It's genuinely good at some things and weaker at others. Polyester takes colour beautifully, which is why these shades have real depth, and it naturally resists water-based stains. It's also very soft. The trade-off is resilience — it doesn't spring back from heavy crushing as well as polyamide or wool. In a bedroom that's irrelevant. On a staircase it matters, and we'd point you at Sensibility instead.

Will it show footprints?

Yes, and so will every velvet-effect cut pile — it's the nature of an upright pile catching light in different directions. Plenty of people like it. If it would bother you, say so and we'll show you a twist pile or a loop instead rather than let you find out after fitting.

Do you fit as well as supply?

We do. We arrange fitting across Clydebank, Glasgow and the surrounding areas, including uplift and disposal of your old flooring if needed.
