Herringbone is a flatweave, and that word is the whole point of the range. A flatweave is woven rather than tufted, so instead of yarn tufts standing up from a backing you get a dense, flat, smooth surface with very little height to it. Three things follow from that. It's exceptionally hard to mark, because there's no pile to crush or flatten — which is why flatweaves end up in hallways, stairs and dining rooms where a plush carpet would show every route through the room. It's easy to keep clean, because dirt sits on the surface rather than working down into a pile. And crucially, at 6.7mm total height it fits where a thick carpet won't: under a door that already scrapes, or up against an existing tiled or wooden floor without a big step. A typical tufted carpet on a decent underlay is comfortably more than 10mm, so that difference solves a real problem in older houses. The pile is a 90% polypropylene blend with 10% wool, which gives it far better stain resistance than an all-wool carpet while keeping a little of the softness. The classic herringbone weave adds texture and a subtle directional pattern without being a loud floor, and the shades run from Ivory and Marble at the pale end through the natural Sisal tone and the warmer Bronze and Copper, into Flint, Zinc, Sheffield, Graphite and Ebony for something darker. The eleven shades below can be ordered through our Clydebank showroom, arranged from lightest to darkest. A twelfth shade, Chalk, is currently showing as unavailable from the mill — ring us and we'll check whether it's due back before you rule it out. Swatch images give a good guide, but the weave texture reads far better in person than in a photograph.

Why is there no price on this page?
Flooring is priced per job rather than per metre off a shelf. The final figure depends on the room size and shape, the underlay you choose, whether we're lifting an old floor, door trims, and the fitting itself. Call us on 0141 266 0400 with rough measurements and we'll give you a realistic figure, or book a free home measure and we'll do it properly.
What actually is a flatweave, and why choose one?
It's woven rather than tufted, so there's no pile standing up — the surface is flat, dense and smooth. That makes it very hard to mark or flatten, easy to clean, and much slimmer than an ordinary carpet. If you've got a door that already catches on the floor, or you're joining onto an existing floor level, a flatweave will often fit where a normal carpet simply won't.
Will it fit under my doors?
Total height is 6.7mm including the fleece backing. A tufted carpet on a decent underlay is usually well over 10mm, so you're saving a few millimetres — often enough. Measure the gap under the door at its tightest point and bring us the number, and we'll tell you honestly whether it clears or whether the door still needs easing.
Is it as comfortable as a wool carpet?
Honestly, no — and we'd rather say so. A flatweave is firm underfoot by design; it isn't the floor you choose for a bedroom you want to feel soft and warm. It's the floor you choose for a hall, stairs, a dining room or a study where hardwearing and easy to clean matter more than sinking into it. A good underlay makes a real difference here, so it's worth spending on.
Does it come wide enough to avoid a join?
It's available in both 4 metre and 5 metre widths, which is more choice than most carpets give you. In a wide room the 5 metre can remove a join altogether — worth raising when we measure, because it affects both the look and the price.
